What is EMM? What do you mean by BYOD and CYOD? What is the difference between MDM, MAM and MCM? How to decide which EMM solution is best for my company? Well, if you have all these questions then here is a brief introduction to EMM and an effort to clarify the differences between MDM, MAM and MCM. No other technology has taken over the world like the Mobile phone technology. Mobiles have become the de facto medium for exchange of information via internet. In order to leverage the advantages offered by mobile technology the companies need to understand the management and security issues associated with them. This is where EMM services come into picture. Enterprise Mobility Management(EMM) as the name suggests involves managing the entire mobile network and devices of an enterprise using a set of processes and technologies. EMM has become very significant as an increasing number of people are demanding to use mobiles and tablets for work purposes. BYOD(Bring Your Own Device) and CYOD(Create Your Own Device) are some popular concepts in EMM. In BYOD the employees bring their own mobile phones or tablets to workplace. This gives employees more flexibility and mobility and enables enterprises to reduce the cost incurred in procuring devices for the employees. On the other hand it poses huge security and management risk. Security can be compromised easily when the mobile devices are lost or stolen, malicious apps are installed on phones or when using any insecure wireless networks. CYOD provides enhanced security and control over the employees devices. It gives employees the flexibility to choose from a limited range of devices that are approved by the organization. Also as the company owns and manages the device the information on the device is secure and free from any malicious apps or software. If the device is lost or in case of theft the company can restore its data. EMM can be broadly classified into the following categories: 1. Mobile Device Management (MDM) is a complete device approach and involves configuring and ensuring the health and status of the mobile devices used by the employees. 2. Mobile Application Management (MAM) is a more specific approach and involves deploying, configuring, updating and deleting applications from mobile devices used by employees. 3. Mobile Content Management (MCM) or Mobile Information Management (MIM) involves security of a specific document repository without affecting other applications and the mobile device. Thus companies based on their requirements can decide to go for any of the EMM services :MDM suite, MAM suite, MCM suite or a combination of any of these. Before deciding on Enterprise Mobility Management service the company needs to decide on BYOD or CYOD model as this will affect the type of services it will require.
